Re: Faculty Council membership

Date: 2004-10-26

At its last meeting, the faculty of education unanimously approved the following motion:

Students in the Faculty of Education who receive less than a B- in a course other than practicum are entitled to retake the course on the same basis as provided by the Academic calendar for undergraduate students who fail a course. Retake of the practicum courses is governed by the rules set out in the Field Experience Handbook.

We believe this to be an interpretation of section 5.5 of the Academic Calendar that works better for students in the Faculty of Education. The calendar reads:

"Students will be allowed to repeat courses in which they have received a grade of D or lower. Students will need to make arrangements with the Registrar's Office to repeat a course.

All instances of a course will appear on the academic transcript. The highest grade will be taken into account in the grade point average."

Since marks of C or less constitute failure in the consecutive B.Ed. program, this regulation creates an odd circumstance in which students receiving marks of D or F may retake courses in order to raise their average to the pass criterion but students receiving marks of C may not. The Faculty believes the intention of the regulation is to provide students an opportunity to remedy poor performance and in the B. Ed. program, that would include courses in which a mark of C had been assigned.

It would be possible to institute a general remedy by altering section 5.5, but we are requesting only that the above statement (perhaps amended to refer to section 5.5) appear in the education section of the calendar.
