For Information
1. Summer Authority
The terms of reference of the Executive Committee state that: "During the summer months, the Executive Committee will act on behalf of Academic Council and the Executive Committee will report to the Academic Council, at its first regular meeting in September, what action has been taken under this authority."
During the summer, the Executive Committee met on two occasions (July 17 and August 10, 2006) and took the following actions:
a. Faculty of Science and Trent University Joint MSc in Materials Science
The Committee granted approval for a new program in the summer so that it could be submitted to the Ontario Council on Graduate Studies (OCGS) and the Postsecondary Education Quality Assessment Board (PEQAB) as soon as possible. Given that the provincial government is funding 14,000 new graduate spaces by 2007-08, many universities are launching new programs and the burden placed on OCGS is considerable. The program received approval from the Trent University Senate Executive Committee on July 11, 2006.
Courses within the program will be taught by UOIT and Trent faculty using both traditional methods and advanced online communication technologies for collaborative lectures and research meetings.
The program will:
1. provide an interdisciplinary perspective on materials science with a focus on fundamentals;
2. engage students in hands-on, fundamental materials research;
3. provide students with a set of scientific skills to permit them to continue their studies in either traditional or interdisciplinary studies or to apply them in an industrial setting; and
4. provide students with scientific communications skills, enabling them to function in a team environment that includes personnel with a range of backgrounds.
The projected start date for the program is September 2007.
The proposed, including a business plan, is attached as Appendix A.
b. Academic Council Handbook
The Committee approved the Academic Council Handbook, as attached asAppendix B. The Handbook has been posted on the Academic Council website.
